Uk Salt Spreading Practices
Recent winters have thrown up some intriguing problems for contractors and their suppliers in the changing design of salt spreaders for the UK winter maintenance market.
The wetter weather has caused concern that frost could more easily form, which has seen a jump in the amount of precautionary spreading taking place. This more frequent operation has shown the cost of carrying the operation into sharp focus.
As a consequence suppliers are being asked to provide more and more cost effective solutions whilst still assisting in the maintenance of the service levels.
Reducing the amount of salt to be used whilst meeting the minimum of discharge rate has revealed that differing effect of salt on the differing road surfaces. Whilst there is no definitive research it is perceived that Porous asphalt and thin surfaces require higher discharge and the spreaders have to be capable of doubling their discharge rates at high speeds.
Government policy to encourage of forms of transport has led to the proliferation of cycle ways and in January 2000 a strategy report entitled winter maintenance of cycleways and footways gave a methodology to carry out this work.
Key areas for the suppliers of equipment were the response times of 6 hours, material types 6mm and a discharge requirement of 20 gms per square metre.
The local authorities desire to ensure these are safe throughout the winter has led to the requirements for spreaders that are extremely manoeuvrable to avoid all the street furniture.
Hence the increase in demand for pickup spreaders, towing spreader and trailer spreaders after a long period when sales of this type of equipment has appeared in terminal decline. A lot of old designs have had to be dusted off and revamped to meet the vastly different Health and Safety legislation.
Lowering the spinner heights to spread materials underneath parked cars and other road users was seen at first to be a relatively simple method of reducing insurance claims. The success of this method was hampered by the introduction of traffic calming measures. These lower heights caused a large increase in damage to the distributor.
Clearly thought needed to be given to overcoming the problem as traffic calming as proved to be overwhelming popular. The Low Throw distributor has proved very successful in meeting this requirement in the developing urban environment.
“Where it goes nobody knows”
Prophetic words from an operator. After carefully calibrating of each type of spreaders for the discharge rate tests and found them to be correct. We assembled on a freezing windswept day on an airfield with the metre square grids marked out. After several runs it was clear that very little salt was staying on the runway yet its whereabouts was unknown.
Clearly with the duty of the operators to ensure the road is free of ice, this was unsatisfactory and is one of the most convincing arguments for the introduction of pre wet technology.
The initial feedback is that by wetting the salt at the position of distribution the material will stick where it lands.
You would have to consider how much of a good thing this it when operators in this country have always used the bounce effect to ensure the material covers the entire carriageway. This is particularly so on the densely trafficked roads in this county in comparison to other nations, such as Sweden and France where pre wetting has become the norm.
If the contract is based on the wide spread widths then the spreaders are capable of throwing the material the distance, yet this can only be achieved with a higher arc of spread. Obviously other road users will effect the spread width and pattern.
At the latest winter maintenance conference, the Surveyor sponsored Cold Comfort it was noticeable that every spreader there was fitted out with pre wet equipment. This has certainly come along way from five years ago the National Salting Trials in Crowthorne may reveal some interesting data on this.
As a more commercial approach has been phased in then increasing focus has been put on salt usage. The introduction of a plethora of weighing systems highlighted any differences in salt usage’s on a given night.
The differences were often marked and many anomalies were thrown up particular, as the control systems had become a lot more sophisticated. As a consequence even the slightest change in settings from one run to the next was there in black and white.
Once re training had taken place it was possible to quickly identify where these anomalies were coming from This led to the contrast professional management It has long been recognized that regular calibration of spreading vehicles is an essential part of any program to control de-icing costs and changes in salt grade, moisture content or supplier should always be accompanied by re calibration according to Andrew Lupton, sales director at Econ.
“The current trend away from a universal 10mm size to a variety of grades such as Thawrox 6 means it is vital that all spreaders are regularly calibrated. The differing discharge settings used for a different salt grade could result in a significant amount of material – even as much as 40% - being wasted,” he said.
“The weather can also have a major impact on salt stored outside. Dry weather will obviously reduce the moisture content of the salt in the pile, giving the salt entirely different characteristics.
“Calibration is vital if the local authority or contractor is using GPS technology. If the spreaders calibration is inaccurate, then the information recorded on vital functions such as spread width and discharge rate will also be inaccurate. If this goes unnoticed throughout the season and is repeated across several vehicles, a completely misleading picture of actual spreading performance will result.”
Smaller grade salt is fast becoming the preferred choice for many winter maintenance providers - a trend, which is backed up by the results from an intensive series of trials, carried out by Econ and the De-Icing Business. The relative spreading characteristics of 10mm and 6mm salt have been thoroughly tested with the subsequent PSD (Particle Size Distribution) evaluation revealing that 6mm salt did not spread as wide or bounce as high as the larger size.
In fact, the average particle size found behind the vehicle were actually less than 3.4mm due to the salt breaking up on hitting the road. This finer salt therefore tends to stay on the road where it is most beneficial, with minimum wastage and reduced environmental damage to grass verges.
For maximum efficiency the particles should ideally be between 2%-4% moisture. This not only helps to prevent the salt from being blown away in the wind but previous research has also shown that salt at this moisture level initiates a more rapid de-icing process. In controlled experiments carried out at -5°C on a 2mm thick ice sheet, 6mm damp salt performed better than 10mm damp salt and both grades performed better with the addition of water.
With the growth in popularity of initiatives such as the De-Icing Management System, accurate calibration is more important then ever argues Andrew Lupton: “This new technology enables highway engineers to be updated daily on all aspects of overnight spreading operations. Salt stockpiles are automatically adjusted and further supplies ordered if stocks are low. But if the vehicles are poorly calibrated then the data will be inaccurate and wrong decisions taken.
“However, if the spreaders have been calibrated to, say, Thawrox 6, DMS guarantees that further deliveries of the salt will have the same moisture content and therefore managers can be reassured that their spreading fleet is operating to maximum efficiency.”
