how do i know if my kitchen floor can support ceramic tiles? my house was built in 1951.?
How do i determine if the kitchen floor and subfloor is strong enough for ceramic tiles?.Also right next to the kitchen, the house already has ceramic tiles (in a pattern of mosaic squares) in the hallway , in the entryway , in the bathroom , and around the fireplace. The kitchen had vinyl sheet , which we have removed. Now we are attacking the white papery adhesive left behind ( any easy tricks ??? help me!!) . Underneath it we can see wood.. i think it is the subfloor. But while removing the adhesive the subfloor is getting nicked and gauged. So what can i do?
Your Sub-floor should be at least 3/8" thick. Your floor joists should be Strong enough to handle the weight. There are tools you can rent that help remove the floor glue. We always called it a Flakey Jake. This will save you a ton of time. It doesn't really matter if the sub floor is getting nicked and gouged because it will be covered with grout. One thing I always advise for a better bond would be a thin layer of self-leveling concrete (Ardex) on top of the sub floor, and then apply your tile and grout on top of that. I have found this to be the easiest and cheapest way of keeping your floor level and square when using ceramic. Hope I helped.
